*Most people take about 14 minutes to fall asleep. These times are adjusted accordingly.

What is a Sleep Cycle?

Your sleep isn't one constant state. Instead, your brain moves through several "sleep cycles" each night. Each cycle lasts about 90 minutes and is composed of two main types of sleep:

  • Non-REM (NREM) Sleep: This is where you start, moving from light sleep (Stage 1-2) into deep sleep (Stage 3). Deep sleep is crucial for physical repair and recovery.
  • REM (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep: This is the stage where you dream most vividly. It's essential for memory consolidation and cognitive function.

Throughout the night, you "cycle" between NREM and REM sleep. A full night's rest typically consists of 4 to 6 of these 90-minute cycles.

Why Waking Up Mid-Cycle is Painful

Ever woken up to your alarm feeling groggy, disoriented, and even more tired? This feeling is called **sleep inertia**.

Sleep inertia is most severe when your alarm pulls you out of deep NREM sleep (the middle of a cycle). By timing your sleep to wake up at the *end* of a 90-minute cycle (when you are in a much lighter stage of sleep), you can minimize sleep inertia and wake up feeling refreshed and alert.

How to Use This Calculator

This tool helps you align your alarm with your natural sleep cycles.

  • "When to Wake Up" Tab: Use this if you're ready for bed right now. It calculates 4, 5, or 6 full sleep cycles *plus* an average 14-minute "sleep latency" (time to fall asleep).
  • "When to Go to Bed" Tab: Use this to plan ahead. Select the time you *must* wake up, and it will count backward in 90-minute cycles to tell you the best times to fall asleep.

Better Sleep for Better Health

Good sleep isn't just about feeling rested. It's fundamental to your health. Quality sleep helps regulate hormones, improves memory, and is essential for managing **blood sugar**. Conversely, poor sleep (often caused by things like **caffeine** too late in the day) can disrupt your entire system.

Use this calculator as one part of your health toolkit. Combine it with good habits—like limiting caffeine in the afternoon and managing your diet—to unlock your best sleep.
